The Irish Standard Mark (ISM)
The Irish Standard Mark is a mark of conformity protected under the Industrial Research and Standards Act 1961, and may only be used under licence granted by NSAI.
The design of the logo is based on the letters cé, the initial letters of the Irish language words Caighdean Éireannach or “Irish Standard”. It is a pure geometric design, based on a vertical line as a focus on which a number of circles and arcs of different radii are drawn, and which intersect to make up the actual symbol. The symbol forms the basis of the range of NSAI marks for product certification and quality registration schemes. For the Manufacturer
Manufacturers of products for which an Irish Standard exists may apply for an Irish Standard Mark Licence, which will entitle them to use the Irish Standard Mark on their products. The presence of the Mark is an indication to the purchaser and user that the product has been made under a system of quality control that is supervised by NSAI. Further, by regular surveillance inspections and tests, NSAI ensures that the required quality levels are maintained within the factory. This independent assurance provides the manufacturer with market advantages over unlicensed competitors, and helps to overcome consumer resistance to unilateral claims of quality.
For the Purchaser
The presence of the Irish Standard Mark on a product is an assurance to the purchaser of the basic quality of the purchased goods and its compliance with the relevant Irish Standard. It also reduces the need for the purchaser to commission independent testing.
Under EU legislation and international agreements, certain categories of standards are automatically adopted as Irish Standards. Licences granted under such standards can therefore be a valuable aid in gaining access to European markets where the Irish Standard Mark would have the same standing as the local national mark.
