Fire Alarm Certification

NSAI Registration Scheme for Commissioners and Certifiers of Fire Alarm Systems.

I.S. 3218:1989 - Code of Practice for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems for Buildings - System Design, Installation and Servicing.

This new registration scheme enables commissioners and certifiers of fire alarm systems to have their operations and procedures assessed by NSAI inspectors.  This process involves inspection of a number of installations against the requirements of I.S. 3218:1989.  The applicant company’s office will also be visited to ensure that appropriate records are maintained and an adequate set of tools/test equipment is maintained.

Following a satisfactory outcome and compliance with the scheme requirements, the applicant company is registered and receives their NSAI Certificate of Registration.

Benefits of I.S. 3218 Registration

  • Improves the credibility of completion certificates from a regulatory standpoint.
  • Grant of Registration entitles the applicant company to use the Irish Standard Mark in connection with installations.
  • The name of the applicant company is placed in the Directory of Registered Fire Alarm Companies.  This Directory is maintained by NSAI, will be regularly updated, and will only detail those companies who are compliant with the scheme requirements.  Regulatory bodies, such as Fire Authorities, will have immediate access to this Directory.
  • Only registered companies can issue an NSAI certificate quoting their NSAI registration number.
  • Promotes a higher level of workmanship.
  • Provides independent verification and reassurance to the end user.

Commissioner’s Application and Registration Process

  • Company submits application.
  • Company is contacted by NSAI to arrange audit date.
  • Following the audit a report is issued and findings are identified.  Appropriate resolution is agreed.
  • The Company is registered.
  • Company can now use their official NSAI Registration number on completion certificates for all installations.
  • The Company will then be subject to regular surveillance audits.
